Hummingbird Feeder 101: The Simple Guide to Safe Nectar and a Clean Feeder
Share
They're back. Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are arriving across the eastern U.S. right now, and if you haven't pulled your feeder out yet, this weekend is the time. But before you fill it up and hang it out — let's make sure you're set up to actually help them, not hurt them.
The Nectar Recipe (It's Simpler Than You Think)
Forget the store-bought stuff. Real hummingbird nectar is just two ingredients:
🌿 4 parts water + 1 part plain white granulated sugar
Boil briefly to dissolve, then let it cool completely before filling. That's it. No red dye — it's unnecessary and potentially harmful. No honey — it ferments quickly and can cause a fatal fungal infection. No artificial sweeteners — they offer zero calories and hummingbirds need the energy. Real flower nectar is clear, and yours should be too.
How Often Should You Change It?
This is where most people go wrong. Nectar spoils faster than you'd think, especially in warm weather:
🌡️ Above 90°F — change every day 🌤️ 75–90°F — change every 2 days 🍃 Below 75°F — every 3–5 days
When in doubt, dump it out. If it looks cloudy, foamy, stringy, or smells sour — it's gone bad. Place your feeder in shade when possible to slow spoilage.
How to Clean It Properly
A quick rinse isn't enough. Here's the right way:
- Empty all old nectar completely
- Rinse with hot water
- No soap — it leaves residue hummingbirds can taste and avoid
- Use a bottle brush to scrub ports and crevices where mold hides
- Scrub all parts thoroughly
- Rinse again and refill with fresh nectar
Clean your feeder every time you change the nectar. It takes five minutes and makes a real difference.
Why It Matters
A dirty feeder isn't just unappealing — it's dangerous. Old nectar grows mold and fungus that can cause swollen tongues, inability to feed, and starvation in hummingbirds. A dirty feeder is genuinely worse than no feeder at all.
The good news? Once you get into the rhythm of it, it's quick and easy. And watching a hummingbird hover at a feeder you've maintained well? Completely worth it. 🌺
